WORLD MAYOR 2016
The 2016 World Mayor Prize will be awarded to a mayor who has provided immigrants with the facilities to contribute to the city’s society, economy and culture. The City Mayors Foundation is looking for mayors who have recognised that people, whatever their origin, status or background, are the greatest capital the world has to offer. This year’s World Mayor Project will identify mayors whose cities have done the most to welcome immigrants and have used their skills to enrich and diversify society culturally, economically and socially. Nominations for Henriette Reker Mayor of Cologne (Germany) Nominated by Elisabeth K., Cologne: Since becoming Mayor of Cologne in October 2015, Ms. Reker has continued her work in support of refugees. She has set up a department at the Mayor's Office tasked specifically with coordinating all refugee matters across the various municipal agencies and offices. She has also established an Ombudsperson for Refugees who is independent of the city administration and deals with any complaints refugees might have. On many occasions Ms. Reker emphasises the talents that refugees bring with them and the opportunities they offer to society, while not denying the challenges that also exist. Her approach is human and practical and she sets a very positive example in difficult times. Nominated by Ilse S., Germany: I support the election of major Henriette Reker (Cologne, Germany), because she is a very though and social competent person, she wants to give back to Cologne its place in Europe culture, architecture, humanity and living partnership with other capitals in Europe and the whole world. She really loves her hometown, being a great cosmopolitan. Nominated by Isabell N-S., Bulgaria & Germany: I strongly support Mrs. Reker as the WORLD MAYOR 2016 because she has indeed shown exceptional efforts to welcome refugees in Cologne and to give them a new home where they can feel safe and explore new opportunities. I would like to emphasize her great attitude and engagement in a special context which might not have been mentioned very often: The city of Cologne suffers from high public debt resulting of decisions made in the past which were not beneficial to the financial situation of the city. In 2010, when Mrs. Reker became responsible for social matters in Cologne (Beigeordnete für Soziales, Integration und Umwelt), Cologne has already faced ~2.5bn Euro debt. Per capita, this is one of the highest debt amounts in Germany. It can be well imagined that generosity for refugees and for welcoming foreigners cost a lot of money and demands high capacity of the public administration. In a city that is debt-ridden as Cologne such additional spending is definitely not favored. However, Mrs. Reker achieved to diligently manage the balancing of interest between the local population and those newcomers who needed our help. She found solutions that were reasonable for everybody living in Cologne. When Mrs. Reker became the mayor of Cologne in 2015 she took over the responsibility to maintain the quality of life for its citizens, to welcome refugees and to make Cologne an important metropolis from an economic point of view, which at the end will secure the wealth of the city. At the same time she does not make unrealistic promises but commits herself to reduce the burden of debt to create intergenerational fairness. This is certainly not an easy task. But she does not compromise on quality, humanity and generosity. Instead she always supports the best idea. As she is not a member of a political party she is able to support the best ideas and best solutions without having to consider too much of political interests. This is remarkable and will in my view guarantee her success. I am convinced that the title of WORLD MAYOR will motivate her continuing on her path and will make her approach a role model for many cities in the world that suffer from difficult budget situations and therefore compromise based on political interests instead of creating value for both existing citizens and newcomers from all over the world. Das war der Grund für eine Messerattacke, die ihr so viel Leid zugefügt hat und die sie nur mit viel Glück überlebt hat. Sie hat ihr Engagement für die Flüchtlinge fast mit ihrem Leben bezahlt und ich hoffe, dass mit der Verleihung des Preises an Frau Reker der erlittene Schmerz ein wenig kompensiert werden kann. Sorry, only in German: Sie ist eine fantastische Frau, die trotz dem lebensgefährlichen Attentat kurz vor Ihrer Wahl, den Mut nicht verloren hat. Bereits in ihrer vorherigen Position in der Kölner Stadtverwaltung hat sie bewiesen, dass sie das schwierige Tema der Flüchtlingsunterbringung im Griff hat. Sie hat diese Auszeichnung verdient wie kein anderer Kandidat. Nominated by Jennifer W., Cologne: Frau Reker hat nicht nur die Zustimmung von Kölnern, sondern auch von Leverkusern und vielen mehr. Ich wünschte, wir hätten in Leverkusen eine so gute Oberbürgermeisterin. Man muss sich mal vorstellen, dass diese Frau in unseren gesellschaftlichen Graden angegriffen wurde, weil sie für Integration einsteht und alle Menschen gleich behandelt und alle als Kölner gleichstellt, egal welcher Nation sie von Geburt an angehören. Eine so tollerante und offene Person haben die wenigsten Städte in hohen Positionen. Frau Reker wurde angegeriffen und ist dabei fast umgekommen und trotzdem hat sie das Amt angenommen und weitergekämpft. Solche Menschen findet man in Deutschland eher weniger. Viele hätten sich einschüchtern lassen, die meisten Politiker in Deutschland haben eine sehr wandelbare Meinung, je nachdem wie gerade die Leute sie haben wollen und was zu mehr Stimmen führt, wenn mal wieder Wahlkampf ist. Bei Frau Reker ist dem nicht so. Ich glaube ihr, was sie sagt und glaube, sie wird Köln noch weiter bringen, als es schon ist. Sie hat sogar über das Rathaus ehrlich gesagt, wie dort gearbeitet wird und das viele Kölner zu lange warten müssen, wenn sie etwas beantragen. Das habe ich noch nie bei einem anderen Bürgermeister erlebt. Die Frau hat soviel gutes an sich und begeistert Menschen, egal in welcher Stadt und steht für Aufrichtigkeit, Ehrlichkeit, Integration (ohne die Unterschiede der Menschen dabei immer zu betonen) und vieles mehr. Ich würde mich sehr freuen, wenn sie gewinnt!! Nominated by Hans-Bernd N., Cologne: Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren von der Jury, Es ist einfach großartig, dass Sie neben den sehr verdienten Kandidatinnen und Kandidaten Frau Henriette Reker als beste Bürgermeisterin der Welt wählen können. Sie können sich damit für eine große Dame entscheiden, die mit ihrem Charme in der relativ kurzen Amtszeit bereits die Herzen der Kölnerinnen und Kölner erreicht hat. Sie ist in der Lage, mit Herz und Verstand die Geschicke der Weltstadt Köln auch in schwierigen Zeiten zu lenken. Nach meinem persönlichen Eindruck kann sie als unsere Oberbürgermeisterin sowohl die Verwaltung von Köln geschickt motivieren und führen, als auch die dazu notwendigen Mehrheiten bei den politischen Parteien herbeiführen. Als ehrenamtlicher Helfer für Geflüchtete habe ich Frau Reker als eine konsequent handelnde und ihre Verantwortung wahrnehmende Persönlichkeit kennengelernt. Ihre persönliche Einstellung motiviert mich in hohem Maße, einen großen Teil meiner Freizeit für unsere neuen Nachbarn aufzuwenden. Ich denke: Frau Henriette Reker ist ein Glücksfall für Köln! Besides her humanity she manages to coordinate and organizes accommodation for more than 14,000 refugees in Cologne.
