The City Mayors Foundation awards The World Mayor Prize and Commendations every two years to mayors who have made outstanding contributions to their communities and have developed a vision for urban living and working that is relevant to towns and cities across the world. The City Mayors Foundation The philanthropic City Mayors Foundation, an international research think tank dedicated to local government, is maintained by professionals from Europe, Asia and the Americas who work together to promote strong and prosperous cities as well as good local government. Established in 2003, City Mayors carries out and publishes original research, provides pro-bono services and establishes guidelines to ethical and honest local government. The City Mayors Foundation has no association with any city or organisation and is run on philanthropic lines. Sponsorships, advertising, subscriptions, donations or any other kind of revenue are NOT sought and will be rejected, if offered. Code of Ethics The City Mayors Foundation and the World Mayor Project were established in 2003 to promote, encourage and facilitate good local government. To strengthen local government further, a Code of Ethics for city leaders, who wish to perform their duties beyond all reproach, has been devised. All mayors wishing be considered for the World Mayor Prize are expected to agree with the Code of Ethics. World Mayor 2018 When the rules for the World Mayor Project were established, the City Mayors Foundation emphasised that the strength of argument expressed in testimonials carried more weight than their actual numbers. By stressing the significance of well-argued comments, the organisers aim to ensure that project participants think carefully about the merits of their chosen mayors. A cross-selection of the most interesting testimonials are published on the World Mayor website. The rules also enable mayors from smaller towns to compete on equal terms with those from large metropolises. The 2018 World Mayor Project is dedicated to women in local government. It features the achievements of women mayors from across the world and honours the best of them. The all-women long- and shortlists will include mayors from towns and cities of all sizes who serve with integrity, determination and imagination. The 2018 World Mayor Prize and Commendations will be conferred to women who have made outstanding and long-lasting contributions to their communities. Women fought prejudice and struggled for equal rights and opportunities for hundreds of years. They did it with courage and resolve. In the 20th and early 21st centuries, women have achieved success in many spheres previously reserved to or monopolised by men, but their contributions are still often undervalued and their potential not recognised enough. Only an estimated 20 per cent of the world's mayors are women. Timetable Nominations were accepted from January 2018, with a first open longlist published in March. The final longlist was published on 10 August. The 2018 shortlist shortlist of candidates was released on 4 September 2018. The winner of the 2018 World Mayor Prize and other results of the World Mayor Project will be announced in early 2019. The winner receives the artistically acclaimed World Mayor trophy, while the two runners-up are presented with the World Mayor Commendation. Background The philanthropic City Mayors Foundation, the international think tank on urban affairs, organises the World Mayor Project and awards the World Mayor Prize. The Prize, which has been given since 2004, honours mayors with the vision, passion and skills to make their cities incredible places to live in, work in and visit. The World Mayor Project aims to show what outstanding mayors can achieve and raise their profiles nationally and internationally. Criteria In previous World Mayor Projects, female mayors have always featured prominently, indeed the 2005 and 2008 Prizes were awarded to women, but by dedicating the 2018 Project entirely to women in local government, we hope to be able to feature more female city leaders, at greater depth. We wish to show what outstanding women mayors achieve all over the world. By doing so, we hope to encourage more women to contemplate a career in local government and run for political office. The women who will be awarded the 2018 World Mayor Prize and other honours will be role models for young women and, indeed, men everywhere.
