The 2023 World Mayor Prize and Awards will be conferred on mayors who have demonstrated that by listening to and working closely with the citizens of their own communities as well as by forming partnerships and friendships with towns and cities at home and across borders, cities can succeed where nations struggle. We all need mayors like these and thanks to your list of mayors we are discovering that there are mayors in the world who, before being politicians, are men and women with extraordinary human histories. In the face of a mayor I look for a loving look, he is the mayor of Oliveri he is in love with his land, Sicily, rich in traditions and culture, he is in love with his community which he has been administering since 2019. He is a mayor with great social and humans. In this administrative process of his, he has sensitized his citizens and those who frequent the small village to a greater civic sense, because it is by improving everyone's quality of life that one also improves one's own. For him, commitment is made up of small gestures. It's not easy being mayor, it's impossible to please everyone. Early in the morning he is already having coffee in one of the bars in the village where he meets the oliveroti and listens to their complaints. People talk to him, inform him of the lamppost that doesn't work or of the hole in the street: life in small towns is this. Oliveri is beautiful, if he didn't love this town he couldn't be its mayor. Its flight is still a mystery that even NASA has dealt with. From the analysis of the weight and shape of the body, in relation to the surface and the wing profile, the bumblebee is "no fly". According to the laws of aerodynamics, a bumblebee cannot hang in the air. Yet there it is. Someone found an answer: Everything says that the bumblebee could not fly. But it succeeds because it doesn't know it. The Municipality of Oliveri and the Mayor Iarrera "fly", in his 4 years of administration the media limelight has discovered the small Sicilian town. Using social media, the Mayor has arrived where other administrators have not arrived. He doesn't have a team of administrators up to him and in these 4 years, almost 5 he has had to fill administrative chasms and the low quality of his travel companions. He succeeded. He "revolutionized" the system. Citizens work directly to improve their country. He devoted all his time to his municipality. A Mayor with few personal ties reaches unexpected goals. He managed to set up his job as an administrator by riding the word love, because administering public affairs is an act of love. He is a Mayor without constraints. It all starts from there. He himself likes to call himself a sports mayor, this is a statement from him: “I like running 3-4 times a week with friends. As we run, we collect waste and then throw it where it must be disposed of. Now many do it and this shows that examples are effective. I also like riding a bicycle and another idea came from two wheels: I have a vintage bike on which I had a wooden basket mounted in which I put all the waste paper I find lying around. From this, another “circular activity” initiative was born. I involved the children in doing the same, with modified and equipped bikes. Whoever recovers the most card as a prize gets discount coupons for the carousel. The bikes were donated by small local businesses and even our local bicycle maker, Mario, gave one to demonstrate that the involvement is general and economic activities benefit from it”. In these 4 years he has shown "revolutionary courage" which has allowed him to increase relationships of esteem and friendship with neighbouring municipalities, to undertake friendly paths with foreign countries. He welcomed the different and thanks to his inclusive commitment today the small Sicilian town is an inclusive community. I encourage the Municipality of Oliveri and its mayor in this contest.
