Comments in support of
Paul Wengert
Mayor of Augsburg (Germany)

The finalists for the 2006 World Mayor Award were chosen on the number of votes received as well as on the persuasiveness and conviction of supporting statements. Below we publish an representative selection of comments received about the mayor.

Comment: Paul Wengert a very good mayor, he is very committed to Augsburg and cared very much for the tsunami victims in Indonesia. And he is very interested for the assembly in Banda-Aceh. He is a very socially concerned mayor! He is the best mayor in the world. Please make him to the World Mayor!!!!

Comment: Dr. Paul Wengert ist ein wirklich bürgernaher Oberbürgermeister und vertritt die Interessen seiner Stadt auch mutig gegen eine bayerische Staatsregierung, die Augsburg sträflich vernachlässigt.

Comment: He is mayor for all citizens of Augsburg. He is not different from you and me and always listens to ordinary people first.

Comment: We are really lucky that Paul Wengert is mayor of Augsburg. A man with creative ideas, a sympathetic listener who translates a lot of projects into action. In all: the world’s best  mayor

Comment: Mayor Wengert started a program to modernize the municipal schools, which already has been very successful. He initialized steps for a better integration of immigrants in Augsburg, especially for the 30,000 people of German origin, who came to Augsburg from the former USSR during the 1990s. At the same time he managed to consolidate the financial situation of the city.

Comment: Augsburg is an upcoming regional metropolis but in the political shadow of the Bavarian federal state government in Munich. Mr. Wengert is in union with the Major of Munich. Both are popular, subtle and intellectual politicians and are in opposition to Bavaria’s ruling conservative party. High-flying plans for modernizing Augsburg´s mobile infrastructure seem to be blocked by the central government. Within a few years, Mr. Wengert’s local government which is mainly a coalition of Social Democrats and Ecological Party reached a very citizen-friendly climate in Augsburg. As Augsburg is a surpassing multicultural City, the importance of an ambitious, vivid cultural climate has a very high value for this proud old city in which peace and citizenship has a historic dimension.

The popularity of Mr Wengert may be illustrated by the fact that the actual opposition party lost some potential rival candidates even before they where nominated.

Comment: Mr. Wengert has established a new kind of citizen-city. Great man!

Comment: Augsburg is a city with many different cultures and has no problems. Mr Wengert stands for this tolerance. He is also leading the city into a successful future. Thank you for your engagement. We need more politicians like Mr Wengert.

Comment: Augsburg has been rejuvenated since Dr Wengert took office.

Comment: Paul Wengert is a successful mayor full of ideas how Augsburg should develop in the future.

Comment: Paul Wengert has changed Augsburg into an important cultural city during the last years and opened it for guests from all over the world with wonderful festivals that make the city lively, colourful and international.

Comment: Hi Paul. As a former Augsburger I wish you good luck. Don’t let your conservative critics get you down!

Comment: He's a refreshing change from what we used to have for many years. Long may he continue!

Comment: Paul Wengert is the right mayor to establish Augsburg as a cultural centre in southern Germany.

Comment: I was a citizen of Füssen for many years and when Paul Wengert was our mayor. Lots of good things were achieved during his term of office. So I know him very well. After my wedding I moved to Augsburg and when he became candidate to be our new mayor, I voted for him again. I have no regrets.

Vielen Dank fuer unser herrliches Staedtle.

Comment: I vote for Mr Paul Wengert because he includes the citizens of his town, works with them and speaks to them directly. I vote for him because civic participation, which is one of the basics for a peaceful future in communities, is the guiding principle for his political activity.
