Below we publish the exchange of letters between Edi Rama, Mayor of Tirana and World Mayor 2004, and Dora Bakoyannis, Mayor of Athens and World Mayor 2005
Edi Rama writes To The Honourable Mayor of Athens Mrs Dora Bakoyannis Athens Greece Dear Mayor Bakoyannis As the Mayor of Tirana, I rush to extend my heartfelt congratulations on your election as World Mayor 2005. It gives me a great pleasure that the Award of the World Mayor is staying in the ancient city of Athens, where also a part of Albanian Community is contributing every day to build a future. Having personally met you and witnessed the impact of your initiatives and knowing your commitment to your work, I am proud to say that his was a highly deserved honour. It rightfully recognizes your vision for transforming your city to one of the most dynamic capitals in Europe. Furthermore, it is a clear testament to the universal principles of democracy, namely for creating a more prosperous life for all people. Dear Mayor Bakoyannis, I wish you continued success in all that you undertake and may I profit from this occasion to extend to you again the invitation to visit Tirana soon. Dora Bakoyannis replies Athens, December 13, 2005 The Honorable Mayor of Tirana Mr Edi Rama City Hall Blv. Dëshmorët e Kombit Tirana, Albania Dear Mayor Rama, I was delighted to receive your letter of congratulations on the occasion of my election as World Mayor 2005; delighted for two main reasons: first, because they come from you, a good friend and the holder of the 2004 title! Second, because of the brotherly relations our two cities enjoy. Tirana is the capital of our neighbour and “cousin” Albania; a city quickly transforming itself under your able administration; the capital of a fast developing country. It is our sincere wish that Albania will also take its place as a partner of Greece in the European Union the soonest possible. As you rightly point out, my city plays host to a considerable number of your co-nationals; they contribute, to the best of their ability, not only to their own progress, but to that of the city as well. They constitute one more bond between our two cities and countries. The Municipality of Athens is doing everything it can to assist them and help them integrate into Athenian life. It is my wish also to visit Tirana at our earliest convenience and to come to know, first hand, the excellent work you do for your city. With my best regards, Dora Bakoyannis |
