About City Mayors

Comments in support of
David Miller
Mayor of Toronto (Canada)

The finalists for the 2006 World Mayor Award were chosen on the number of votes received as well as on the persuasiveness and conviction of supporting statements. Below we publish an representative selection of comments received about the mayor.

Comment: Mayor Miller has turned around a city that had slid into political favouritism and corruption that led to a major judicial enquiry. Appointing an ethics commissioner, opening his door to all Torontonians and crating new rules for all city councillors has bee the first step in reclaiming the city for all its residents. Successful pressure on other levels of government have resulted in better funding for infrastructure, sadly deteriorating from years of neglect. Most of all, Mr. Miller has involved all citizens in a campaign to clean up the city, revitalize the formerly industrial waterfront and make everyone proud to be part of a diverse, multicultural, world class Toronto.

Comment:
The Mayor has introduced so many new projects to clean up the city both environmentally and socially. He has put in new housing facilities for very poor people and is fronting projects to make Toronto a cultural, eco-conscious city where people of every socio-economic level can live and thrive.

Comment:
David Miller is the World Mayor!  Smart, articulate, caring, and very approachable and friendly with a firm grasp on issues that affect people of a big city, and the tenacity and toughness to get his vision into reality. (His looks good too!) And I have personal confirmation that he does indeed get the subway to work!

Comment:
The Mayor cares about the environment. He encourages the people of Toronto to take an active roll once a year to spend 30 minutes of their time to get out and pick-up garbage. He has pushed hard - and won support- from the Canadian Federal goverment to transfer more funds to help Mass Public Transit for all major Canadian cities.

Comment: David Miller
is a socialist mayor, acting for the benefit of the citizen over corporate interests. It may not make him a fiscally aggressive mayor, but he is a mayor who listens to his constituents.

Comment:
Mayor Miller faced adversity in the midst of gun violence crisis. He revitalized the waterfront that would have taken years to even begin. He is a ecologically aware mayor and has many initiatives to turn Toronto into a Green City.  He is a mayor with a big heart and genuine interest in the well-being of the City.
