WORLD MAYOR 2018
Dedicated to women mayors The 2018 World Mayor Prize and Commendations will be conferred on women mayors who have made outstanding and long-lasting contributions to their communities. The organisers wish to show what outstanding women mayors achieve all over the world. By doing so, they hope to encourage more women to contemplate a career in local government and run for political office. The women, who will be awarded the 2018 World Mayor Prize and other honours, will be role models for young women and, indeed, men everywhere. Salina Hayat Ivy, Mayor of Narayangonj, Bangladesh, was shortlisted for the 2018 World Mayor Prize. |

Nominations for Salina Hayat Ivy Mayor of Narayangonj (Bangladesh) Nominated by Gerlinde M.-L., Germany: I vote for Ms. Ivy, because I think it is a great sign to the world if a female mayor from Bangladesh wins this prize! She did a great job and I think she has to overcome some resistances to do her work! Chapeau! Nominated by Bangladesh Girl Guides Association, Narayanganj: The mayor’s qualities: • Dynamic leadership • Honest and sincere • Commitment to citizens • Famous and popular mayor in Bangladesh • Inclusive planning and decision making • Trust worthy leader Challenges and achievements: Women Empowerment Women empowerment is a big challenge for the honorable mayor. She has been working with the poor community since 2004 to improve their livelihood. Different development projects in poor community brought leadership among the women especially in the poor community. The women are operating small shops, business and raise their voice on development agenda. After all, women are alive now and contributing their efforts on development trend. I hope and believe, woman empowerment brought significant changes to the life and livelihood of women in Narayanganj city. Complain Management System One complain box is set up at City Information and Services centre to receive complain from aggrieved citizens. In addition, Grievance Redress Committee is also formed to resolve the problems. Honorable mayor directly monitor the public complain and resolve the issue as soon as possible. Public Engagement in Infrastructure Development Project Citizens are invited to engage in the planning and development process of the city. I can mention Baburail Canal Restoration Project funded by World Bank. We consulted with the citizens and people express their views and opinions in this project. Public Procurement Now all the procurements are accomplished by online software. It ensures level playing field for all bidders. Procurement committee has members from different organizations to keep transparency in the evaluation process. Public Accountability Meeting The city arranges Public Accountably Meeting two times in a year. Mayor and councilors all sit together in front of the citizens and share their activities with the citizens. People also share their problems and as well as give suggestions to improve the development. Moreover, Annual City Development Budget is also shared with the people to ensure transparency and accountability. |
