CoronaVirus and World Mayor
Following the Covid-19 pandemic, it is with regret that we have to announce changes to World Mayor 2020. We had originally planned to release this year’s shortlist at the end of July and announce the winner of the 2020 World Mayor Prize in January 2021. Unfortunately, this is no longer possible.

The first phase of World Mayor 20/21 will now be extended to December. In January 2021, we will, instead of announcing this year’s honours, publish the names of those mayors shortlisted for the World Mayor Prize. SEE FULL DETAILS

World Mayor 2020
Mayors fighting Poverty
In 2020, as in previous years, the World Mayor Prize and Commendations will be awarded to mayors who have made outstanding and long-lasting contributions to the well being of their communities. This year, the City Mayors Foundation, the organisers of the World Mayor Project, is looking for mayors who have made the relief of poverty one of their top priorities. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of different causes of poverty. Easing poverty in cities, towns and villages requires an understanding of its causes and a passionate desire to find solutions.

The World Mayor Project invites you to nominate mayors who find poverty unacceptable and have an action programme in place to alleviate its immediate effects. Your candidate for the World Mayor Honours will also have conceived policies and concepts to reduce poverty, neglect, isolation and inequality long-term.

We are looking for mayors from communities of all sizes and invite nominations from all parts of the world.

PLEASE NOMINATE YOUR CANDIDATE FOR WORLD MAYOR 2020

During the course of 2020, the World Mayor Project will feature mayors who have first-hand knowledge of the misery material poverty, social isolation and general neglect causes to adults, young people and children. The chosen mayors also understand that prolonged poverty and growing inequality harms the social fabric of communities, be they cities, towns or villages.

Mayors to be considered for the World Mayor Honours will also have show that they have a commitment to building a long term strategy to tackle and reduce poverty by creating successful partnership arrangements with community groups, public and voluntary education, health, environment, housing services and businesses.

Mayors to be considered for the World Mayor Honours will also have shown that they regard all local residents, including the poor and the vulnerable, as valuable members of their communities. Mayors will not tolerate any form of discrimination against people who have little. Mayors will ensure their rights in society and protect their dignity.

Above all, the organisers of World Mayor 2020 wish to hear from you about mayors who, together with their teams, have a proven track record of supporting the disadvantaged in their communities and who have developed concepts that could be emulated by other cities.
