About City Mayors

Mayor Jeff Perlman:
The City of Delray Beach

The city of Delray Beach, south-east Florida, is a diverse community of 63,000 people. It is the only city in the history of state to twice win the All America City title. This honour, awarded by the National Civic League, recognizes communities that have adopted innovative measures to solve complex problems. Because of our ethnic and racial diversity, I like to think of Delray Beach as ‘America in 16 square miles’.

We have well and truly embraced the concept of diversity, and therein lies our strength.

As Mayor, I am working constantly to improve race relations, boost economic development, improve our schools and redevelop our downtown area and associated neighborhoods. In this we have achieved a considerable measure of success and we are now considered to be a model for downtown revitalization, neighborhood renewal, historic preservation and "smart"  growth.

Among my accomplishments are:
*The passage of a $24 million Parks, Recreation and Culture Bond that will fund three new parks, improve old parks and provide for the building of a new library, senior center and soccer complex.
*We are embarking upon a ‘race relations dialogue’ and have adopted Community Unity as our theme.
* We are directing our efforts at providing economic workforce housing and are currently engaged on land trusts and a 270-unit traditional neighborhood that will be affordable for workers such as teachers, fire-fighters and police officers.
*We have spent around $8 million on improving our schools and have made significant gains in student achievement.
*We have formed a Neighborhood Advisory Council to improve levels of communication between residents and government.
*A vocational school for drop-outs and ‘at-risk’ youth has been established. This teaches them job skills and enables them to earn their high school diplomas and live productive lives.

In short, Delray Beach is nationally known as a city that does things right - and differently. We are civic entrepreneurs, and we are proud of our legacy of citizen-driven planning and leadership.

Introducing
World Mayor 2006

The World Mayor project is now in its third year. As in 2004 and 2005, this year’s World Mayor will again be seeking out mayors who have the vision, passion and skills to make their cities amazing places to live in, work in and visit. The World Mayor project aims to show what outstanding mayors can achieve and raise their profiles. It honours those who have served their communities well and who have made contributions to the well-being of cities nationally and internationally. The most outstanding mayor of 2006 will be presented with the World Mayor award.

In 2004, Edi Rama, Mayor of Tirana, won the Award. The 2005 winner was Dora Bakoyannis, Mayor of Athens and now Greek Foreign Minister.

Between January and May each year, citizens from across the world are invited to nominate mayors for the World Mayor Award. They are also asked to provide reasons for their choice. After the close of the nomination stage, City Mayors, the organisers of the contest, prepare a shortlist of mayors who go forward to the second round of the World Mayor contest. In 2006, the list of finalists includes 50 mayors from North and South America, Europe, Asia, Australasia as well as Africa.
