About City Mayors

Comments in support of
Bärbel Dieckmann
Mayor of Bonn (Germany)

The top 10 mayors in World Mayor 2005 were selected equally on the number of votes received and the quality and conviction of supporting statements. Below we publish an edited selection of comments received in support of Bärbel Dieckmann, Mayor of Bonn (Germany).

Comment: Bonn is an international city with an international Mayor. The City of Bonn is a Multicultural city where people of different races and cultures live together in harmony. The City of Bonn is also one of the cleanest cities in the world and it keeps progressing economically, culturally and socially with a clean environment. We salute Mayor Dieckmann.

Comment: She is one of the greatest women I've ever met!

Comment: Mrs Dieckmann has supported and brought forward structural changes in Bonn, turning the former capital city of West Germany into today's international community. Bonn is today home to 12 UN offices, international EU and UN conventions, such as the International Conference for Renewable Energies 2004 - and plays a leading role in sectors such as development politics and environmental policies.

Bonn has also attracted numerous global players to the city and region - as are amongst others T-Mobile and the Deutsche Post World Net. The city today profits of its added value and registers declining unemployment rates. Bonn and its surrounding regions developed into one of the most productive and innovative locations in the central European economic area.

Due to Bonn's political background, the region provides excellent infrastructure, transport links, accommodation, security capabilities as well as outstanding experience and expertise in hosting international conventions.

Comment: She was elected major at the time, when all the federal government institutions left Bonn and moved to Berlin. The fear was great that population figuers would fall. Cultural and economic ressources would vanish - so Ms. Dieckmann had to manage great changes. As results we see today, that the city is growing and still famous as hometown of 'global player enterprises such as "Deutsche Post" DHL, Deutsche Telekom, Haribo and others. Surely the personal performance of Major Dieckmann was important to make the change of the cities role and structure so successful. The citiziens know this and thanked her by re-electing her twice.

Comment: Bärbel Dieckmann is the only woman I EVER HEARED who really tried always to help not only in Afghanistan in poor countries also in Bonn and everywhere else.I thank you for all that Bärbel Dieckmann to give people in such poor countries a chance of a better life. Not only me there are millions of people worldwide who think in the same way like me. If you really want to have a great world mayor i mean a really great mayor who already saved so many peoples life in asia and europe than you have to vote for a real good mayor: "BÄRBEL DIECKMANN". Most of all people who were already saved by her know that she is a really good mayor .In my opinion she is the only woman I know who is really mayoral

Comment: Bärbel Dieckmamm is a warm hearted woman who has managed the transformation of Bonn from a government city to a service capital while keeping in mind the quality of life in her city; e.g. by supporting child friendliness and biking facilities in public transport. Last not least she has supported Bonn to become a capital of science.

Comment: She represents our town as its best. And even though she isn`t member of the party I belong to, I´m convinced there is no one who can manage the difficulties in any town better than she does.

Comment: Ms Bärbel Dieckmann is best mayor in the history of Germany. Please vote for Mrs. Dieckmann. She is a socially aware mayor. She has also transformed Bonn from a capital city to a successfull international city. We can trust her. She has made of Bonn an international city that is very friendly towards foreigners.

Comment: Baerbel Dieckmann - she is an excellent mayor, and a charming woman, too.

Comment: My vote goes to Ms. Bärbel Dieckmann, Mayor of Bonn, Germany, because she epitomises what being a Mayor is all about. Her untiring commitment to the City of Bonn is both impressive and inspiring. Bonn's transition from German capital and seat of government to UN City and thriving seat of international business are not least a product of Ms. Dieckmann's belief in Bonn, its people and its future. Thank you for a job well done.

Comment: I vote for Mrs. Dieckmann. She is a socially aware Mayor. She has also transformed Bonn from a capital city to a successfull international city. We can trust her.

Comment: We need more mayors like Bärbel Dieckmann - we need more women like Bärbel Dieckmann.

Comment: Bärbel Dieckmann has played a very large part indeed in attracting business and international organizations to Bonn after the German government moved to Berlin in the late 1990s. She is also deservedly popular with and close to the people.

Comment: Baerbel Dieckmann: On the one hand: Charming, upfront, let me say "rubbing shoulders all sorts of people". That´s why the ´new´ Bonn has become an international city of dialogue.

On the other hand: Coming off the fence, strong to decide, never being in a rut: That´s why Bonn was (is still) able to paddle the own canoe, when the former capital could expect no more help from the government in Berlin.

Comment: Mayor Dieckmann has made of Bonn an international city that is very friendly towards foreigners.

Comment: Mayor Ms Baerbel Dieckmann is very active in shaping the City of Bonn as an International City hosting several Secretariats of the United Nations and international conferences. Thanks to her Bonn today has a specific profile for north south and environmental issues. Ms Dieckmann also is in a deep relation to some of the Bonn located Non Governmental Organisations (NGO)and she also is supporting them with infrastructure and her experience.

Comment: I believe Mrs Dieckmann and her team have done an outstanding job securing Bonn's stability following the transition of the government to Berlin. Then been very effective creating awareness, dialogue and wide spread support for key projects such as a unique Bonn campaign support effort with Care and the UN encouraging and supporting local business, schools, public agencies, the public in general to run their own small actions to help Afganistan; a coordinated help effort following the tsunami catastrophy; establishing that support for the MDGs is a public affair and touches every member of the public.

Comment: Frau Dieckmann, ja, die kann´s immer nett und ohne Arroganz!

Comment: When the German government and parliament moved from Bonn to Berlin, many people thought Bonn would revert to be a provincial town in Germany. Instead, due to Mayor Dieckmann's efforts, the former West German capital has become one of the most popular international meeting places in Europe.

Each year the most outstanding mayor is presented with the World Mayor Award. In 2004 the Award was won by Edi Rama, Mayor of Tirana. Dora Bakoyannis, Mayor of Athens, is the winner of the 2005 World Mayor Award. 2005 results
